Janet Yellen on Public Service, Independent Institutions, and What Good Government

Former Treasury Secretary and Fed Chair joins The Good Government Show

FOGELSVILLE, Pa. – [Release date] – The Good Government Institute today released a new episode of The Good Government Show featuring Janet Yellen, former U.S. Treasury Secretary, former chair of the Federal Reserve, and former chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Yellen sat down with host Dave Martin after receiving the National Academy of Public Administration’s Elliot L. Richardson Prize for Excellence in Public Service. She explains how the Treasury works, why the national debt’s trajectory matters, and why a central bank free from political pressure is a long-term strength for the economy.

She also makes a personal case for a career in public service. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career in public service,” Yellen says, describing the “astoundingly talented and committed” people she worked alongside.

On what makes government work, she is direct: “Adequately funding government agencies so they can perform is necessary for good government.” She also talks about the international negotiations she led on a global minimum corporate tax, which drew agreement from 137 countries. And since she grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, there is pizza.

“Janet Yellen explains complicated economics in a way even an English major can follow,” said Dave Martin, host and president of the Good Government Institute. “She also reminds us why public service is worth choosing.”
