Small Bets, Big Impact

How microgrants are transforming lives—and redefining local government

New York, NY — April 2, 2026— What can $1,500 do?

In a compelling new episode of The Good Government ShowMayor Juan Gonzalez of San Leandro, California, delivers a powerful answer: it can launch businesses, create jobs, and rebuild trust between communities and government.

Through a modest but innovative Small Business Technical Assistance Program, the city is proving that small investments—paired with smart support—can generate outsized impact.

The program combines training, mentorship, and microgrants—often around $1,500—to help entrepreneurs, artists, and small business owners turn ideas into income. The results are tangible and immediate.

One participant used a small grant to attend local festivals and grow her business. What started as a sticker hobby expanded into embroidery—then into multiple machines and hiring her first employee.

“It enabled her to get out there and connect with people… and now she’s hiring,” Gonzalez explains.

Another participant, who received only training, gained the confidence to expand her textile business—and now teaches others, creating a ripple effect of entrepreneurship across the community.

In total, the program has supported more than 50 individuals—at a cost of just $35,000.

Pull Quotes

  • “Good government serves the needs of residents and improves their quality of life.”
  • “You can do more with the same—or less.”
  • “Sometimes a small amount of money makes a big difference.”
  • “The real credit goes to city staff… and the community.”
  • “When people see government working, they begin to trust it again.”

But the episode goes beyond small business. Gonzalez offers a broader philosophy of modern governance—one rooted in efficiency, responsiveness, and community connection.

From digitizing city services to reduce bureaucracy, to expanding library access, to empowering residents to report issues instantly via mobile apps, San Leandro is demonstrating how local government can evolve to meet people where they are.

And perhaps most importantly, Gonzalez emphasizes that the best ideas don’t always come from elected officials.

“They come from staff. They come from the community,” he says. “Our job is to listen.”
